General John D.W. Corley is Vice Chief of Staff, Headquarters, U.S. Air Force, a role in which he presides over the Air Staff and serves as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Requirements Oversight Council. His previous staff positions comprise a mix of operational and joint duties in Tactical Air Command, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, and the Joint Staff. He received his B.S. in engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and earned his wings at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, in 1974. He earned a master’s degree in business administration and another master’s degree in national security and strategic studies. He also is a graduate of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security. General Corley has significant experience in intense combat, most recently during Operation Enduring Freedom. As Combined Air Operations Center Director, he directed the safe recovery of isolated personnel during the largest combat search-and-rescue mission in 50 years and was awarded the Bronze Star as a result. His aviation career includes more than 3,000 flying hours with a wide range of combat experience. He has commanded at the squadron, group, and wing levels. In addition to the Bronze Star, General Corley is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among other awards.
